Tile Over Sheetrock Wall

Continue placing the first course of tiles in the same manner using spacers. If existing tiles are beyond repair remove the tile and install a piece of wallboard in its place. Wash the wall with tsp tri sodium phosphate or an ammonia based cleaner to remove any grease or oil. Builders often use this as an enclosure wall if its tiled over.

Add another 1 8 inch to the height measurement and place a mark on the vertical line. Apply a thin layer of mastic or thin set mortar below the horizontal line using a grooved trowel. However it is not a good substrate for tile because it s softer and more flexible than regular drywall. Greenboard is a kind of water resistant drywall.

Though it is perfectly acceptable and meets most county building codes to tile over sheetrock in both dry and wet applications its use as a tile backing should be reserved for dry areas. Remove the tile and prepare the wall according to the corresponding instructions above or tile over the existing tile.

Measure up from the bottom of the wall the height of the tile. Step 3 apply primer to the sheetrock.
